What Should Your Chemical Peel Aftercare Look Like?

Skin Chemical Face Peels

Chemical peels are effective treatments for getting your skin in tip-top shape, whether you are after fixing those annoying fine lines, hyperpigmentation, breakouts, or a whole host of other skin concerns. However, it is essential to take care of your face in the healing process to help the skin bounce back to life and increase the benefits of chemical peels.

So, before looking for a laser skin clinic to get a chemical peel, make sure you are familiar with the after skincare tips to strengthen the results.

Smother Your Skin with SPF

First thing’s first. Stay out of the sun as much as possible, and do not take the SPF lightly. Your skin is at its most sensitive post-peel; it is had layers of skin removed. The new skin will be vulnerable to harsh UV rays. Therefore, your skin needs to be taken care of more than ever. When you are not able to stick to the shady spots when you are out, compensate with a sunscreen featuring an SPF of 30+ to protect your skin from harmful UV rays. Use it for a minimum of six weeks post-peel.

Rely on Soap-free Cleansers

If your cleanser is not soap-free, now is the time to invest in one. Soap-free cleansers are safe on sensitive skin and are not too drying. Soap usually makes the skin feel tight and dry by stripping it of its natural oils.

Cleanse the Skin with Cool Water

Your skin might be feeling a lot tender after a chemical peel. So, hot water could be uncomfortable on your newly obtained skin; it can cause inflammation. Instead, wash your face using cool water for a gentle alternative for your healing skin. However, remember always to pat your skin dry afterwards. Make sure you do not rub it.

Moisturise the Skin

Apply a gentle moisturiser to keep your dry skin hydrated and to restore moisture. Your ideal moisturiser should be free of harsh chemicals and irritants (including acids and acne treatments), which could upset your sensitive skin. They should be water-based as moisturisers with high water content are lightweight and feel good on the skin. (Keep in mind that moisturising will increase the peeling process as softened skin would not flake off as quickly.)

Remember, the Practitioner knows Best

This one is the best chemical peel aftercare tip you could be given. It is best practice to always listen to your practitioner and follow their advice once you undergo a chemical peel treatment. They will be able to offer you customised aftercare instructions on how to take care of your skin post-peel, tailored to your skin and the type of peel you have had. They may even offer you a special moisturiser to help with the road to healing.
